PHOSPHATE ESTHER TO LUBE OIL CONVERSION
In 2009 Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) contacted Alstom Power to discuss the feasibility
of converting the OEM provided Phosphate Esther Control Oil System to Lube Oil on its' two Brown Boveri (1975) Steam Turbines
at the Aguirre Puerto Rico Generating Station. The plant cited the high cost of the Phosphate Esther Fluid and the difficulty
of maintaining the fluid within OEM specifications. Component damage, such as Servo Degradation was a major factor in
the consideration as well.
Alstom Power contacted
Ron Mueller, General Project Manager of EHC Field Services, Inc. and requested a written procedure for the fluid converion
on the Units. Mr. Mueller provided the written procedure for the conversion and Alstom Power incorporated it into their general
specifications for the project. PREPA approved the procedure and ordered the implementation for the 2009 Scheduled Maintenance
Outage on Unit 2.
EHC provided the Project Management,
Equipment and Procedure implementation for the project which was successfully completed during the outage on time and under
budget.
After two years of operation of the Lube
Oil Control Oil System, the plant reports maximum operating efficiency of the system and fluid analysis within OEM specifications.
On November 25, 2011 EHC sucessfully completed the conversion of Unit 1.
